Say hello to the cheese wheel cake – the latest cake trend of 2018

Cakes are always the centre of most celebrations but what do you do if you *gasp* hate sweet desserts? Well, enter the cheese wheel cake, this year’s cake trend you’ll be seeing heaps more of at weddings and birthday parties.

It’s easy to see why the cheese wheel cake has become a thing. Novelty factor aside, it’s actually a cake you can build yourself without being a professional, and for relatively less than you would pay for a multi-tiered bespoke cake. It also has a rustic beauty that fits with the larger trend of more casual weddings and parties.

Here are some tips to building your own cheese wheel cake:

1. An easy way to make sure the tiers work visually is to make each layer of cheese has at least 2cm diameter difference.

2. Don’t feel pressured to build a cheese wheel tower.

The bigger your cheese wheel cake, the more small touches you have to incorporate to make it look chic and styled. Instead, consider making a few small ones of different heights.

3. Go with different cheese styles.

Like any well-composed dish, balance of flavours and textures are essential. Mix up hard and soft cheeses. Use the accompaniments such as figs, nuts or flowers to add colour and set the vibe of the cake.

4. Always go with the good stuff.

A cheese wheel cake is well … predominantly cheese. So while we’re all guilty of loving The Laughing Cow, it might not make the cut when this is going to be the centrepiece of your party. For a list of legit cheesemongers in Singapore, click here.

And for some serious inspo, we’ve found some of the best cheese wheel cakes by these talented people!

This looks simple right? Two tiers of cheese wheels of the same size just stacked on top of each other. But Stone Cove Catering shows that it’s the details that complete the picture – the use of a bold red cheese for contrast, a lush garnish of fresh herbs, and the cute mice toppers give this cake a polished and stylised finish.

This Dallas-based wedding planner was excited when their bride decided to do away with a traditional wedding cake. And it’s easy to see why when the result is an elegant cheese wheel cake that’s just as impactful as a standard wedding cake.

To celebrate her wedding anniversary, @elmoation and her husband bought the same cheeses from the cheese store that styled their beautifully rustic wedding cheese wheel cake. And we need that wooden slab in our lives 🙂
